Thank you for inquiring about Social Dance
Classes at BlueRidge Ballroom.
New Beginners start
with our 2-month
Foundations
to Social Dance Course. Here you will learn some of the basic
elements that are included in all the dances and experiment with those
elements in some easy Tango, Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, Cha-Cha and Swing
patterns.
Foundation classes
usually begin monthly on a Monday or Tuesday
at 7:00 p.m.
The
Introductory Foundations Course
includes
a 50-minute class and two hours of practice time every week. The
practice time is as important as the class. Your time commitment then is 3
hours/week. Practice Time is scheduled from 8-10 every Tuesday night.
Immediately following
the Foundation Course is Social Dance. Social Dance builds on the
knowledge you gained in Foundations and prepares you to move into more
advanced classes when you have gained enough dancing experience to move up.
Social Dance and all our other classes are offered at our low monthly rate
of $35/month per person. These classes do not include the dance practice
parties which are paid for separately.
We may be a little different than
other studios you may have heard about or experienced. We teach dance
because we love it and we want to
share the joy we have found with you.
Our professional staff is the finest in the area. BRB’s dance
director is a 3-time national champion and the staff is highly trained to
meet the learning needs of the beginning social dancer to coaching the
serious dance-sport competitor. Each member is committed to constantly
improving their own dancing and teaching skills to insure you always get the
best instruction available.
What to wear.
You do not have to purchase expensive dance clothes to begin dancing. Wear
comfortable clothing you can move in. Let the following be your guide. If
a skirt is too tight to run in, it is probably too tight to dance in. Wear
shoes that are secure
on your feet. Dancers do a lot of turning and a loose sandal may cause you
to turn an ankle. Regular high heels may not be your best choice. The heel
is set too far back for dancing and again, they can slip and cause you to
turn a knee or ankle. Heavy boots or large tennis shoes will not be
flexible enough in the foot to allow you to move comfortably. You will
notice that many of our advanced dancers do wear high heels. These are
specially designed with a steel arch support, steel heels, and suede soles
that move easily across the floor. The heels balance your weight properly
for dancing. Many of our men also have special shoes with flexible suede
soles. As your dancing progresses you may wish to purchase a pair. We do
not sell them, but we can direct you to good suppliers when you are ready.
Most of our students say
they are more comfortable at the dance practice sessions in clothes they
would wear out for a nice social evening. Slacks and shirt for men, skirts
or dress slacks for ladies. The studio is cool. Dance is great exercise.
We all overheat. The gentlemen are too courteous to ask ladies to dance if
they are perspiring. Ladies, we want them to ask. Bring a warm sweater.
